Beach Bits:
• Turner's first five AVP championship matches were all against Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh, and she won her first title in her sixth try, against a different opponent. • From June 2008 to May 2009, Turner advanced to five FIVB semifinals with three different partners. • In 2006 Turner played in events in 18 of 19 consecutive weeks, including four trips to Europe in that span.
2010: Turner and Akers started the year with a second place finish in the AVP season opener in Fort Lauderdale. The duo won a silver medal in Seoul, tying the career best for Turner and marking the fourth straight season she has won a medal on the FIVB Tour. On the AVP Tour the duo played in six semifinals in seven events. 2009: Turner began her partnership with Angie Akers, with the duo advancing to the semifinals in their first two AVP events, as well as their first FIVB tournament in Osaka. Their second FIVB event together was the World Championships, where they placed fifth after being eliminated by the eventual tournament winners. In Moscow and Marseille the duo likewise placed fifth while being ousted by the eventual winners. They advanced to a total of three semifinals on the AVP Tour, and four on the FIVB Tour, including the last three events of the season. 2008: Turner and Wacholder played in five semifinals in their 12 AVP events, including the finals in Huntington Beach. In San Diego, Turner recorded her first career title as she and Wacholder went undefeated. Turner, the 17th ranked player on tour, was chosen to play in the finals of the individual event with Nicole Branagh. Turner was eighth in both blocks per game (.84) and aces per game (.64). On the FIVB Tour Turner played nine times and won two Silver medals. She also played once with Mason and twice with Branagh, finishing second and third in their two events. 2007: Began playing with Rachel Wacholder, and after finishing fifth in their debut advanced to five consecutive semifinals. On the season they played in 11 Final Fours, including four championship matches. Turner ended as the seventh ranked player on tour. Turner was fifth in blocks per game (1.13) and 10th in aces per game (.65). On the FIVB Tour, the duo made their international debut in a Grand Slam in Paris, and won the Bronze medal after advancing from the qualifier and losing only to Misty-May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh. They played in six other events, placing fifth in the season finale. 2006: In nine tournaments with Wilson, the pair placed fifth twice. Turner then played the final three events with Nancy Mason, finishing third in Brooklyn in their first outing. Turner, the 17th ranked player on tour, ended ninth in blocks per game (.79). Internationally, she played five times with Wilson, with a best of 13th, and once with Mason. 2005: With Wilson, placed fifth eight times and advanced to two semifinals, ending the year as the fourth ranked team. The placed third in both Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach, with their only losses in each event coming at the hands of the top two seeded teams. Turner, the eighth ranked player on tour, was 10th in blocks per game (.78). The duo played twice on the FIVB Tour, placing ninth in Acapulco. 2004: Formed a partnership with Makare Wilson, advancing from the qualifier in their first event together and placing 13th. After their only loss in a qualifier in their second event, they again advanced to the main draw and placed 13th in event number three. From that point forward Turner secured a main draw berth automatically, and the duo placed fifth twice during the season. In just her second season on the beach, Turner qualified for the end of the season individual event featuring the top 16 players. She ended the year seventh in blocks per game (.64) and 10th in kills per game (6.33). 2003: Turner played in her first pro beach volleyball event in Fort Lauderdale with Lynda Street, but did not emerge from the qualifier. After another qualifier with a different partner, she paired with Franci Van Zwieten and the duo advanced to the main draw in their first event, placing 13th. They advanced to three main draws in five events, and Turner ended the season playing in a qualifier with a fourth partner.
Hot Winter Nights: Played in the finals in five of the seven HWN events she played in 2008, winning in both Madison and Charlottesville. In 2009 she played three times, with a best of second.
College: Turner was all-conference all four years at the University of Central Florida (first-team in 1995-97). Was AVCA all-District in 1996 and 1997 and in 1997 she was the conference Player of the Year as well as being named to the all-Academic team. Named the 1998 UCF Scholar Athlete of the Year as well as the Female Athlete of the Year. Upon graduation in 1998, she received a Bachelor's in Speech Language Pathology Communicative Disorders. She holds the school record for blocks and is second in career kills. Her 151 consecutive matches played ranks fifth in NCAA history. In 2004, she was inducted into the UCF Athletic Hall of Fame. She played on the U.S. National Team before brief stints with the USPV and playing in Greece in 2003.
Personal: Formerly Tyra Harper, she married fellow AVP player Chad Turner in January 2005. They live in Southern California during the season, then return to Florida during the off-season. An only child ("and I love it"), she has a cat, Roxy. She loves theater, especially Phantom of the Opera .
