Tonon was born in Italy, but lives in Hawaii where she attended BYU-Hawaii, graduating in International Business Management & Intercultural Communication Studies with a minor in English. As a junior she was named to the conference all-academic team. She finished the 2004 season ranked second in ace percentage.

Tonon played on the professional beach tour in Italy beginning in 1997 and ranked in the top five before beginning play on the AVP Tour in 2007.

She has a Ph.D in Business and Communications and wrote her thesis on "Problem Solving Strategies & Decision Making."

Tonon speaks seven languages: Italian, English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and a dialect
