Only Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh of the United States stood in the way of Juliana and Larissa Franca’s complete domination on the 2005 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour. Juliana and Larissa set a SWATCH-FIVB World Tour record for single-season earnings for both men and women teams with $409,750 in winnings in 2005 as the pair claimed six gold medals and 14 podium placements in 15 international starts. The reigning Olympic champions, May-Treanor and Walsh won six international starts last season with four gold medal wins over Juliana and Larissa in Berlin, Paris, Salvador and Cape Town. Juliana and Larissa posted their first-ever win over May-Treanor and Walsh in the finals of the Corona Mexico Open in Acapulco last October. Since the start of the 2004 season when Juliana and Larissa played in their first-ever SWATCH stop together in Fortaleza, the young Brazilians have earned $533,750 together in only 25 events with seven gold medal finishes and 18 podium placements. The earning total is the fourth-best women’s career total since the start of the women’s SWATCH-FIVB World Tour in 1992.
The highlight of Juliana and Larissa’s first season on the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour was a gold medal at the 2004 Mallorca event where the Brazilians defeated German Olympians Suzanne Lahme and Danja Musch in the finals. The July 10 gold medal finish was 12 days short of Juliana's 21st birthday as she became the youngest women's player to win SWATCH event. At 20 years, three months, 15 days, Vassiliki Arvaniti of Greece broke the mark as she and Vasso Karadassiou defeated Juliana and Larissa for the Stavanger gold medal in 2005 (July 2).
While the Mallorca win was Larissa’s first, Juliana had captured a SWATCH-FIVB World Championship for players under 21 in Catania, Italy when she teamed with Taiana Lima to win the 2002 crown by defeating Isabelle Forrer and Melanie Schoneberger of Switzerland in the finals. After winning the title, Juliana missed eight months of competition due to tore ligaments in her left knee. She returned to play on the Brazilian domestic tour in 2003 before competing in two SWATCH-FIVB World Tour events at the end of the season with the legandary Jackie Silva. On the Brazilian domestic tour, Juliana won the 2005 Queen of the Beach competition. She and Larissa also won the point's title on the 2005.
Through the first-half of the Brazilian domestic season in 2006 season, Juliana and Larissa have compiled 29-1 domestic mark in six starts. The pair has won 14 Circuito Banco do Brasil gold medal since the start of the 2005 domestic season. In 18 domestic events since March 2005, Juliana and Larissa have an 87-5 match mark.
Juliana started playing Volleyball by accident as she saw it as a way to avoid going to physical education classes. Prior to that, the only Volleyball she played was on vacation. She was part of a championship team in the first event she played. In her third tournament, she was selected as the event's top player. After her indoor sucess, Juliana opted for Beach Volleyball when invited to play on the beach of Fortaleza. "I feel as free as a bird on the beach," said Juliana.
